The earthquake occurred at 10:13 am Pacific time, with its epicenter located in the Forbidden Plateau. It was felt from Prince Rupert, British Columbia, to Portland, Oregon. The quake demolished 75 chimneys in the communities of Cumberland, Union Bay, and Courtenay.

The earthquake caused extensive damage throughout Vancouver Island. Buildings collapsed, roads were cracked, and landslides occurred. The earthquake also triggered a tsunami that caused damage along the coast.
